The year is half over. If you are like me, you are probably wondering, "Where did the time go?" July is a great time to take an hour or two to assess how your year has went so far, and think about what you would like to accomplish in the second half. Here are some ideas on how to perform a midyear "checkup" for your Virtual Assistant business.

1. Look at your financials.

First, make sure that your books are up to date. Don't worry if you have six months of catching up to do - it happens to the best of us! Believe me, though, there is nothing worse than sitting down in December and trying to figure out something from last January. You need to know exactly where you stand financially in order to make good decisions in the coming months. Next, analyze your expenses - are there any expenses you can reduce or eliminate? Be sure that you are setting aside an appropriate amount of your income for taxes. If you do not know how much to set aside, ask an accountant.

2. Analyze your marketing efforts.

Make a list of the different marketing tactics you have used so far this year, and then analyze what has worked and what has not worked. Is there anything that has been a waste of time or money? Then scrap it! Make sure that your website is fresh and up to date. Make plans to attend a local chamber of commerce or other networking association meeting, if you don't already. Summer is a great time to touch base with your clients because business might be slower for them as well as you. Be sure to tell each client that you appreciate their business, and ask if there is anything you can improve on to help them grow their business.

3. Set goals for the remainder of the year.

Review your goals from the beginning of the year (If you missed doing that, now is a great time!). How are you doing? What would you like to change? Write down a short list (no more than 3) of things you would like to accomplish by December. Consider keeping your list in a place where you can easily see it. Break your goals down into specific steps, and then add those steps to your to-do list.

Contemplating a Cruise?

Perhaps you have never been on a Cruise vacation, although you have thought about it. Or maybe you have been on a Cruise and would love to go again, but are hesitant, due to recent negative reports regarding Cruise misadventures.

You may be wondering whether or not Cruises are safe, due to recent media stories about assaults, fires and missing persons. Although it sounds like a simple question, to some extent, it depends upon who you ask.

First of all, if you ask the Cruise lines, it come as no surprise that they will tell you that Cruises are the safest means of travel available. Although they cannot deny that the tragic events actually occurred, they state that they have cooperated fully with all authorities and have acted in the best interest of victims and their families.

On the other hand, there are those victims and or their families, and they may tell another story. Some have claimed that they feel that information had been withheld from them or that they were given no follow-up regarding the status of the investigation.

The stories told by the victims are as real as is the pain experienced by them and their families. That is undeniable. It is even worse to never know what actually happened to a loved one, but are there situational reasons beyond the control of the Cruise Lines that may contribute to this lack of closure?

It seems that there may be some discrepancies about the reporting and accountability of crimes that occur at sea. One factor to consider is where the event in question occurred, in terms of the high seas, vs. "territorial waters".

To make things more confusing, there is no absolute way to determine where territorial waters begin, as it can vary from state to state. Besides, this in some cases, the boundaries of these territorial waters maybe in a state of change, such as the Gulf Stream, in Florida.

When you are on board a Cruise ship outside of the United States territorial waters, you are no longer under the protective jurisdiction of the United States. There is no United States law enforcement, either, and you are instead under the jurisdiction of the county whose flag the ship is flying.

In fact, you may find that the only presumed source of "protection" on board a cruise ship is a Security Guard, with little or no law enforcement experience.

These factors have not gone without notice, and some are concerned enough to take action to address them.

One example is the International Cruise Victims Association, which is made up of victims of cruise crimes and their families. This group is rallying for cruise reform, including the Congressional Bill known a s H.R.5707.

This Bill, also known as the Cruise Line Accurate Safety Statistics Act or CLASS Act, strives to address and improve the managing and reporting of crimes that happen on board cruise ships. Furthermore, the Bill would require that a report be made to the Department of Homeland Security within four hours, whenever a person becomes missing while on a cruise.

However, to date, the status of H.R.5707 is still pending and as yet, it has not been passed. In order to become law, it would have to be passed by both Houses of Representatives and signed by the President. This has not happened yet.

Passing legislation can be a time-consuming process, so you may be wondering what your odds are of safe travel by cruise right now.

Well, actually, you have to keep things in perspective and realize that although there have been crimes and accidents on board cruise ships, they are not the norm. The fact is that cruises are a very popular form of travel and statistically, most end favorably. So, yes, you can take a cruise and have a great time!

However, at this point, if you really want to be certain about your safety while on a cruise, the fact is that you should take the matter in to your own hands. So, what follows are some simple guidelines for safer cruising.

1. Download the Cruise S.O.S. card, and bring it with you when you board the ship. It contains phone numbers for legal and governmental assistance, as well as instruction on what to do if you are injured or the victim of a crime.

2. Bring your prescriptions with you and have a medical card, identifying any health conditions or physical disabilities. Bring the contact information of your Physician and a summary of your medical history.

3. Always be vigilant on board a cruise. Look for suspicious individuals and avoid isolated areas. Always let someone know about your whereabouts and when you expect to return.

4. Try not to be alone at any time, and try to "blend in", not stand out in a crowd.

5. Do not open your cabin door to anyone, even cruise personnel, before checking to make sure that their visit is authorized.

6. Never leave your beverage, alcoholic or otherwise, unattended while you engage in other activities, such as dancing or using the restroom. If you do, don't drink it when you return.

7. While on the subject of drinking, be moderate and don't abandon caution, even after having "a few". Try to designate a member of your party to act as a "watch" to keep anyone from engaging in risky behaviors, such as getting too close to the edge of the ship.

8. Shortly after you board the ship, try to become acquainted with the layout and floor plan and know where to go if you need assistance.

9. Remember to take 2 copies of your important documents and leave one at the purser's safe and one locked safely in your cabin.

10. Make sure that you lock your cabin door every time you leave, and examine your quarters before you re-enter. If you are alone, have someone that you trust accompany you there.

11. Try to get to know a few of the other passengers and try to look out for each other, if a situation arises. If someone seems helpless or alone, keep a watchful eye on them. In the absence of official law enforcement, we must become our "brother's keeper", as well as our own.

There are further protective measures in the works for cruise passengers, like those proposed in Project Safe Cruise, which suggests having an independent "Sea Marshal" on board each ship. They are also proposing a citizens watch group and an "Amber Alert" for missing persons. In the meantime, you CAN be safe on a cruise, as long as you take your intelligence and common sense with you when you go!

My First Pet Grasshopper

The lush & peaceful greenery was suddenly disturbed by a silent intruder. There was a faint buzzing noise. At a close enough distance, one can actually hear the creature hopping from tree to tree, finding a tasty leaf of its preference. A grasshopper (also known as locust) had infiltrated my home backyard.

I took a closer look at the creature. It was about two inches long from head to tail, green in color & had very long hind legs. It was relatively small for a grasshopper. It can be a daunting task to catch a full grown sized grasshopper. Therefore I was keen to apprehend the puny sized intruder. I approached the little grasshopper ever so slowly. It did not seem to realize my actions as I came from directly behind it. A grasshoppers eyes are large & can probably view more than 180 degrees on both its sides. Therefore, I was probably coming from its blind spot.

When I came to about a feet of the grasshopper, I opened the palm of my right hand & carefully closed it unto the grasshopper. I did not put much force into my hold as I did not want to harm it & break any of its flimsy looking legs. Thereafter, I managed to trap the grasshopper between the leaf & the curved palm of my hand. The grasshopper did not even see it coming or else it should have had flown away. I felt good because I was in control of another creatures life. The grasshopper got owned! It was no longer free. I was its new Lord! Anyway, it was the first grasshopper catch in my life so I felt that I had actually achieved something special that day.

I asked myself what I was going to do with it. I really wanted to take a closer look at it. I was actually considering making it my pet. In order for it not to die on me, I had to find some important information about grasshoppers. I did not know about what it ate, drank & most importantly how to keep it alive in captivity.

I found out from the internet that grasshoppers ate plants. Also, some information mentioned that grasshoppers do not need to be fed with water. They get most of their water supply from the plants while they are eating. A green leaf is probably as juicy to a grasshopper as a few slices of bread in bowl of chicken soup are to humans.

I took an old clear plastic chocolate box & drilled a couple of small holes on every side of the box for oxygen. Then I took some leaves from the tree where I caught the grasshopper & placed them in the box along with the grasshopper. As a final touch, I took a wooden cap from the depleted oregano shaker & filled it halfway with water. The grasshopper may or may not be drinking from it but anyway, I thought making a private pool for my new pet grasshopper was a good idea. No more problems. No way was the grasshopper going to die under my watch.

The former owner of the homes, Shriner's Hospital was unaware of these practices and has since began work with the city to assure that buyers retain free and clear title of their homes.

This is the kind of real estate scam that we have seen being operated all over the country and it pays for residents to educate themselves on the various scams that are being perpetrated at any given time. Education is the primary opponent to real estate scams for knowing what to look for and which situations are suspect.

On another front in the real estate world, a historical ranch has been sold in the Austin area. The famous Goodrich Ranch which comprises 27,000 acres of prime land has been largely purchased by Copper Stallion Properties. The company purchased 21,000 acres and have started planning for resale of the newly subdivided 11 parcels of land. This has presented Austin home buyers with a fantastic opportunity as the former Goodrich Ranch site is some of the most beautiful and scenic land in the Austin area. There are nights that most of us come home and we just can't bear to cook another dinner. Sometimes we've just had a very stressful day at the office, maybe we forgot to take something out to defrost, maybe everyone just plain can't agree on what it is they want. Whatever the case is, if you live in Orange County California there are restaurants that can remedy the situation. Most are chain restaurants, but the food is good, atmosphere friendly and everyone goes home ready to face the evenings "menu" of things that have to get done in a much better mood. Here are some worth trying:

Claim Jumpers-Kids and adults can never complain that they haven't had enough to eat in this gold miner themed restaurant. Even my meat-loving husband asks me to share with him! The rotisserie chicken is always hot and juicy. The BBQ beef ribs are meaty and tender. I don't know where this chain gets their idaho potatoes, but they are the biggest I have ever seen. The salads are wonderful, the soups to die for. The muffins are big, moist and delicious. One slice of chocolate decadence cake can literally serve a half dozen or more easily. It's a fun place and they are in all areas of the county.

The Old Spaghetti Factory in Newport Beach. This is not only a fun place for the family, but very affordable as well. They open at 5, get there early, as the biggest bugaboo is the parking and the wait. Luckily, if the wait is too long, you can make a short walk to the famous "Crab Cooker" and order up a shrimp cocktail to go at the service bar! It's also a fun area to walk around in during the warmer seasons. There's a pier just across the street, and the ocean is obviously a stone's throw away.

Over at the famous South Coast Plaza, there's a Rainforest Cafe. There's usually a wait, but they have a fun gift shop, lots to look at there. Plus it is in the famous South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, so you have a ridiculous amount of upscale shops you can window shop at-including Tiffany's and Armani's. They also have several other family restaurants in and around the huge complex.

Some of the others include the chain restaurants of Ruby's (a forty's diner), Maggiano's (italian), Corner Bakery, The Back Bay Rowing and Running Club and a Lawry's Carvery. You will not go hungry!

Another popular family friendly chain is The Cheesecake Factory-again large portions and wait times abound at any of the units, so be prepared!

If you are looking for cheap eats-head to any of the county's many Ruby's at most of the malls. Mollie's Country Kitchen in Laguna Hills or Ted's Burger's in Laguna Niguel.

That brings us to some of the negatives. The start-up for many well-known franchises is well over $100,000, although you can get smaller ones for as little as a few thousand. Many of them also require you to purchase inventory and supplies through them. This ensures your fitting into the model and gives your customers pre-knowledge of what to expect.

Another option is to purchase an existing business. If it is a successful business (hopefully youve done research to ensure this or have solid ideas on how to improve an existing situation), you will already have a customer base and possibly staff and employees. This will help the transition, as you will have everything already in place as you walk in. Hopefully, the deal you have worked out also includes some training from the current owner or management. The negatives in buying an existing business can include inheriting existing problems and a large outlay of money, depending on the size and nature of the business.

With both of the above options, you also usually have to figure in the cost of maintaining a building, cost of property purchase, or rental costs. Managing staff also presents its own unique issues, so you also need to be prepared for that if staff comes with the business or is required for the franchise.

In the third option, starting a new business, there is a whole different set of advantages and disadvantages. To start out, you do not necessarily have to have your own space to buy or rent. Many small opportunities you can pursue can be done out of an existing home office or with your home computer. You also have the option of being a "one-man band" which eliminates cost of staff but also adds personal responsibility. A way around that is to hire freelance people for your writing, graphic design and business set-up and continuous needs.

A further advantage is that often you can maintain your current source of income, perhaps even being able to taper off the hours worked in your present employment as your own business ramps up. That is a best case scenario. Often, a clean break once the new business has started gives you more incentive to grow it quickly. In either case, it is imperative to have some means of supporting yourself until the business is self-sustaining and eventually also replaces and then exceeds your current income.

Disadvantages to starting your own business can include other items such as needing to provide your own health insurance, hiring an accountant, and legal services.

In any of the three options there are pros and cons. Starting your own business using any of these methods is exciting, exhilarating and scary. Controlling your own destiny and starting your own business is not for everyone, but the road less traveled is often the most fulfilling path to take.
